Culver City Local Amenities

Culver City Pacific TheatersCulver City was established by entrepreneur Henry Culver in 1913 when plans for its development were announced to local business men at The California Club. Culver's choice of land was based on its geographical location which is equal distance from downtown L.A. to the east and Venice Beach to the west. In 1915 Culver convinced Thomas H. Ince to relocate his film studio from the Venice Beach area to Culver City and in so doing "The Heart of Screenland" was established by the first film studio in Culver City.

MGM, Hal Roache Studios, RKO and Desilu Productions all called Culver City home at one time or another. To this day, Sony Pictures is the largest company in Culver City employing over 6,000 people. This creative trend continues with many technology and internet marketing companies locating their offices in downtown Culver City.

There has been resurgence since the late 90's, and as a result Culver City has acquired the reputation for being a pedestrian-friendly community, with great restaurants, and a thriving art district. Architecture has been a key component in the resurgence of Culver City, attracting avant-garde practitioners such as Thomas Mayne, Eric Owen Moss, and Steven Ehrlich who have established studios here. One of the first partnerships which helped shape downtown Culver City was between Eric Owen Moss and developer Samitar Smith. Together they transformed the Hayden Tract into what is now known as Conjunctive Points, which up until then had been a forgotten track of land once occupied by warehouses and old railroad tracks.
